Nice to wake up to
One of my favorite things to do is to camp out in the great spots we have in this country. The central part of the South Island of New Zealand is just perfect. It is remote enough to get well away from everyone if you want to, or you can go to some more frequented places and still get nice quiet time alone. The lake in the photo is what I woke up to early in the morning. I had pulled in quite late and didn't get to see the view through the dim evening light. The water lapped quietly on the shore and I was off to sleep in minutes. Sometime in the night I slowly came to the reluctant realization that I would have to do something about the chilling cold I was experiencing, but my extra down cover was in the back of the van and that meant going outside. "To hell with it," I thought, "I'm tough enough not to worry about a little cold". Its just so hard to get to sleep when you know you are wrong and are going to have to do something about it. I fought it for a while and decided that if I had more than two hours before dawn I would have to do something. I flicked open my phone and sure enough, I had been asleep for only two hours. I had to do it quickly, so I jumped out, ran to the back of the van and lifted up the door. As it went up I looked into the clear night sky. It was such a spectacular sight that I just froze in place. It wasn't the cold, I didn't take any notice of that anymore. The sky was ablaze, absolutely ridiculously full of shimmering stars. The milky way was a thick mass of light, almost solid to look at. There are holes in that thing. Places where there is just blackness and places so full as to almost be solid. The whole sky from horizon to horizon was alive with light. It was the steam from my breath that reminded me of the cold. I wanted not to breath so I didn't spoil the view. Eventually I had to retreat as the ground frost was thick and my feet were bare. It was a shame to have to go inside, but I needed the sleep. The morning broke and I was warm, warm, warm. There was good light so I cleared a small patch of condensation from the window and again was staggered by the view. To hell with the cold. I jumped out and was greeted with the view you see in the photograph. Central South Island. Go there in the winter. |
